Frequently Asked Questions
What is Zebedee?
Zebedee is a MUD (Multi-User Dungeon), one of the longest-running in existence, based in the UK.
What the hell is a MUD?
It's an online multiplayer world, primarily using text for input and output. So type stuff to do stuff.
What, like an old school text adventure from the 1980s?
It's a lot more interactive and dynamic than that. It's like an automated real-time online version of Dungeons and Dragons.
Oh, so it's like an old version of World of Warcraft?
You could say that, yes. MUDs predate the World Wide Web by a decade. There's a large social aspect too — a cross between a chat room, Zelda and the web.
So it's gonna cost me a fortune in microcharges?
No, Zebedee is totally free to play. The MUD is maintained and developed by its players on a voluntary basis. It is continually expanding and evolving. If you're that way inclined, you could aim to master the game sufficiently to become a developer.
Ok, so why should I play?
MUDs are fun! You get to pick a character class such as a warrior or magic user, battle impressive enemies, and solve challenging quests. Or you can treat it purely as a social experience.
How best to start?
Connect through your browser using the Play button. There's automated help in the game once you create a character (try one of the easier suggested classes), plus help files, walkthrough videos, and friendly players who are often happy to help. Some have been playing for 30 years!
